Message from Nona
My name is Noura Abu Hamam and I am a Palestinian living in the Gaza Strip. My family and I have survived four wars in Gaza. I was always well aware of how hard life in Gaza was, but I never imagined it would be as hard as facing genocide, carnage and destruction.
I am writing to you without knowing what our fate will be tomorrow, in an hour, or even the next moment. I am writing to you as my family and I are under bombardment and shelling. Our house in Tal al-Hawa, Gaza City, was bombed after we fled to the south. We fled seven times in search of a safer place, but we found that there is no safe place in Gaza. Now we live in a tent in Rafah and endure a very hard life, without food, clean water or warmth. My children are getting sick from the polluted water and have no access to medical services. All our memories were wiped away when our house was destroyed, but I have not told my children that their rooms, toys and memories were destroyed.
My eight-year-old son Tamim, who is passionate about football, asks me if his first football trophy still shines or if it has collected dust. I don't know how to respond, what to say. I don't want to crush his hopes because our house has been destroyed. My six-year-old daughter Rita, when we first fled our house, left all her toys behind and clung to her father's hand, trembling with fear. "I don't want to die, Daddy. I don't want to lose anyone," she tells him. She begs him to save us from this war. Rita, a delicate butterfly who only knew the love of her family, now knows only fear. "I just want to survive," she continues. She remembers the beautiful dresses and the wonderful paintings left in the destroyed house and says she must organize her wardrobe and try on all the dresses in one day. I hold back tears and pray constantly for our innocent children that we will survive.
